This house at 154 E. 111th Street, just west of Palmer Park in the Roseland area, predates the park by a few years. Just two blocks from Michigan Avenue, the commercial heart of Roseland in its heyday, and not far from the Pullman plant, this would have been a desirable place to live, which shows in the attractive housing stock that remains from that era.

Unfortunately, as can clearly be seen by the vacant lot to the east, deindustrialization and white flight have done a great deal of damage to the fabric of the neighborhood. A couple of days after we passed by on the Perimeter Ride, a woman 8 months pregnant was shot and wounded in mid-afternoon a few blocks away. Perhaps it is fear of such violence that accounted for the emptiness of Palmer Park, despite its delightful Burnham-designed fieldhouse and pool with free waterslides.
