One of my lost photographic opportunities. I still feel disappointed every time I walk past Threshold and Union Houses.

This was one of the many early offices of BBC TV, accomodating overspill from both Television Centre and Lime Grove studios.

The BBC never owned the building, and around 2000, they decided to let the lease lapse. In doing so, they had to return it to its original condition, and as part of the renovations, the beautiful circa 1960 lettering, which jutted out above the door, was torn off.

This was a huge shame, as the doorway proclaimed the building to be the home not of BBC TV or BBC 1, but the BBC Television Service. Fantastic. And I didn't photograph it in time. :-(

You can still just see the shadow of them. Mouse over the photo to see the note, showing you the full text.

For many years the Doctor Who production office was in this building (or Union House, adjacent)

This house on Blackstone in Hyde Park is a lovely Victorian from 1886, designed by the architectural firm of Flanders & Zimmerman. It is a private home now, but some quick research in the Tribune archives reveals an interesting past. While I didn't unearth much about the early days of the house, it was the residence of one Oliver F. Smith until his passing in 1940, at which time an estate auction was held in the house. It was home to the Holtzman family in the late 1940s; two sons of the family attended the University of Chicago in those days, when receiving a scholarship or earning a BA merited you a mention in the paper. By 1951, the house had become the Crossroads Student Center. Crossroads was a program of the Catholic Lay Auxilliary of Missions, specifically employing American and European social workers "to convey the meaning and hope of American democracy thru the plain and simple medium of kindness." Offering language classes, cultural enrichment, student groups, and informal support of various kinds, this little house served thousands of foreign college students each year, of all races and religions. It was bursting at the seams, and plans were announced in 1961 to build a new building. Nothing seems to have come from the plan, but Crossroads soldiered on in this house through at least 1972. After that, I can't figure out what happened, or how the home came back into use as a private residence. One can only imagine the fascinating and important people who passed through that distinctive recessed porch over the years.

I saw this house as I was driving around the Third Ward of Houston early this morning. I started taking photographs of it, and then the owner of the house, Cleveland, came out to say hello. He was jovial and kind, and I was thrilled that I got to meet him!

When I look at this photo in retrospect, it makes me think of the burden of convention that so many of us carry on our respective shoulders. Cleveland repudiates convention, and he is the more endearing because of it.

This house at 154 E. 111th Street, just west of Palmer Park in the Roseland area, predates the park by a few years. Just two blocks from Michigan Avenue, the commercial heart of Roseland in its heyday, and not far from the Pullman plant, this would have been a desirable place to live, which shows in the attractive housing stock that remains from that era.

Unfortunately, as can clearly be seen by the vacant lot to the east, deindustrialization and white flight have done a great deal of damage to the fabric of the neighborhood. A couple of days after we passed by on the Perimeter Ride, a woman 8 months pregnant was shot and wounded in mid-afternoon a few blocks away. Perhaps it is fear of such violence that accounted for the emptiness of Palmer Park, despite its delightful Burnham-designed fieldhouse and pool with free waterslides.

The house at 4722 North LaPorte, just south of Lawrence (and technically in the Portage Park community area) is one of a row of workers' cottages built along the west side of the street in 1946. The modest size of the house reflects the scarcity of the war years, as does the fact that it and all its neighbors were constructed of "common brick", of the type usually concealed or relegated to back walls.

4722 LaPorte has two small dormers above the first floor, one of two designs built on the block. The other features a simpler front-facing gable. Brick colors vary, but they're all common brick. These days, all the lawns on the block are immaculate.

Sandwiched between railroad tracks, and now the Kennedy Expressway, these houses once looked across the street at what must have been an industrial facility. Today, instead, they are towered over by banal infill development whose only visual interest arises from rhythmic repetition.

House of Père Lacroix, 1873 by Paul Cézanne, oil on canvas

To brighten Cézanne's dark palette knife, Pissarro told him "Never paint except with the three primary colors. . . . " The bright hues and quickly worked brushstrokes reveal here the effect of Pissarro's influence. Greens and yellows contrast in the foreground, and multihued vertical drags of the brush recreate watery reflections. Cool shadows contrast with the orange of a tiled roof. Light emphasizes the blond planes of the building, which is shaded with blues, greens, and mauves, and where broad strokes and heavier paint convey texture.

The elaborate signature and date are unusual in Cézanne's work. Perhaps he intended it for public exhibition—at the urging of Pissarro, three of his works were included in the first impressionist show—or for a patron. In 1873 Cézanne moved to the village of Auvers, where this was painted. It was near Pissarro's home, and the two of them often painted side by side during 1873 and 1874. Auvers was also home to Dr. Gachet, a collector who would later care for the despairing Van Gogh. Cézanne may have hoped Gachet would purchase his work, which was ignored by the public. Cézanne returned to Provence, and after inheriting his father's large estate in 1886, largely abandoned efforts to promote his work. He did not realize commercial success until he was in his fifties.

This house was built in 1874 for beer baron Frederick Wacker. Its form is typical of cottages in the area, but with significantly more ornament and that amazing second-floor wraparound porch. According to Curbed Chicago, it is on the market and could be yours for .299 million. The house next door was originally the coachhouse, but was moved forward and remodeled to house Frederick's son, civic booster Charles Wacker. [blogged]

This stone house at 5505 S. Cornell was built in 1888. Surrounded now by larger buildings, it is an elegant throwback to the street's less-dense, suburban past. It surfaces in the news a handful of times over the years. In 1902, the Kingsberry family advertised their need for a "respectable young man and wife" to help around the house. By 1908, it was the home of William Merriman, vice president of a construction concern. Merriman was injured in a late-night car crash in Hyde Park in November of that year. In 1912, the "Society and Entertainments" column notes that the Misses Kirkland, of this address, were guests of the Hawley family at Narragansett bay, Rhode Island. By 1963, the fortunes of the house had clearly declined; a classified ad listed 4 rooms for rent. Fortunately, today, it has been restored to fine condition, with the elaborate metalwork painted in dramatic red and black. It may be dwarfed by the buildings that sprouted up around it in later phases of Hyde Park's development, but it holds its own with style. [blogged]

The house despaired over the river, its eyes large and empty, its shingles gnawed by winds. Drawn to every forsaken thing, I pulled the canoe onto the river rocks and waded to the shore.

The vacant doorway flashed white for an instant at the flash of an apron and strong arms on a young woman in a grey checked dress which disappeared again in the house's darkness. The grass was still crisp below my feet as I approached the structure. The sudden sign of habitation was too surprising to believe; the grey house still decayed in front of me, and I followed no worn paths to the abandoned doorway.

She was not surprised to hear me enter the kitchen, and I am thankful she was not afraid, either. She had sponged clean several square feet of the floor, otherwise overrun with thin mud and rotting paper. She simply said "Hello", stood up and turned around. She shrugged, smiled and glanced at the molding walls.

I started scooping the mud out with my bare hands, already dirty from the climb up the bank. With the worst of that gone I tried to fashion a broom out of the hard grass that grew on the border between the shore and the wood. It was ineffective but it gave my hostess an excuse to stand while I bent over and continued scrubbing the floor.

By the night we had cleaned enough of the bare stone floor to lay down there, exhausted.

It was the sound of pigeons that woke me. The girl was gone.

The birds owned owned the second floor, where they lived and bred among their own shit and dead. All but the most stubborn fled at a few waves of my grass broom, but none of them offered serious resistance. After I chased the last one out I saw my friend smiling at me, then laughing down the stairs.

There was something in the angle of her nose as she turned, a certain peculiarity as she turned. I did not follow her down the stairs then because I knew it would take more than one or two days to decide if that nose was truly beautiful.

I spent the rest of the morning sweeping out the second story. It was a major advance against the birds, but only a temporary one until the windows could be closed.

This did happen in time. Slowly my friend and I built up the house's defenses, tearing out the worst of the internal walls, learning how to fashion rough planks with my ax to board up windows and replace shingles. Perfection was beyond us, but we relegated the leaks to predictable places and procured enough clean blankets to huddle in, against the wind that could not be kept out of the house.

The day that I retrieved the last of my things from the canoe, I saw frozen foamfloating by on the river. In another two days these grew to small plates, and in another two weeks a sheet of ice that might have been thick enough to walk on encased my boat. The world outside turned white and my makeshift broom became handy for sweeping out the stray flakes of snow.

Survival was only possible due to our successful excavation of the cellar. The piles of lumber and smashed concrete had covered an enormous larder of canned goods that would last us years, if it was still good; in our state of need we decided it still was. The only other thing of interest we found were some 1940's era pinup models. My friend was so amused by their dirty innocence that she hung them up on the walls and used to mock me. "Oh, Kevin," she said once, "don't you wish you could be in New Orleans now with Marsha," making curving motions with her hands around the tiny photo, "instead of cooped up here in Saskatchewan with a walrus?"

She struck a pose in her thick furs which was not particularly walrus-like; nor did it help to settle the nagging question of her nose.

Sometimes we would sit and watch the world outside, so much darker than out candle-lit home. Sometimes we drew patterns on the walls with charcoal, dirtying our clean house for the sake of novel visual experience.

One day, one of the last I was there, it rained. Snow turned to mush and fed the waking river. We sat by the ashes of the kitchen fire and I asked her, "In all the time in this house, I've never understood where you came from, how you came to be here."

She kicked the ash and said, "I guess there are many forgotten things in this world." And as she turned away, I knew that she was beautiful.

Rain collected in the buckets, so much that the floor was wet in the morning. The wind whistling through the shutters felt strangely warm.

I love houses, and it has taken the purchase and resale of two before we could afford our present, and last home.

This was home #2, which had the BEST sunlight.

On the left is the Garrick Inn, on the right is Harvard House.

The Garrick Inn is Grade II* listed. It is a public house built in 1596. It was heavily restored in 1912, replacing a 1800 brick front. It is timber-framed. It has three storeys. It is said that the plaque of 1564 started from this place, and has been an inn since 1718. The name was changed from the Greyhound to the Garrick in 1795, in honour of David Garrick, who did much to the towns tourist trade by his encouragement of Shakspeare.

Harvard House is a Grade I listed building. It was a house, with the front dating from 1596, largely rebuilt after a fire in 1595. It was built by Thomas Rogers, grandfather of John Harvard, and it was the home of his mother Catherine Rogers. It is owned by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. It had rear extensions in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is a timber-framed building. It has 2 storeys with and attic. It was restored by the novelist Marie Corelli, the work financed by Everard Morris of Chicago, and presented to Harvard University for use by students and visiting Americans.

In 1995 Harvard House became the Museum of British Pewter, after the donation to the SBT of the Neish Pewter Collection.

This little, old concrete slum houses are located near the wonderful ocean beach in Puerto Cruz de Tenerife. This picture was created for my flexible friend epSos.de and can be used for FREE.

Those buildings are actually used by regular people who live in them. The old houses were build a long time ago and as cheap as it was possible, so that the houses are outdated now. The irony of this architecture is that this partially empty barracks were build near the ocean, so that the land is more valuable than the buildings themselves.

A panoramic shot of Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House and its neighbor, the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects and completed in 2004.

Viñoly was particularly concerned with the context of the new school, bordered on one side by one of Frank Lloyd Wright's master works, and on the other by the gothic-style Rockefeller Chapel, with its tall carillon.

Viñoly's design is centered around a quad enclosed in a greenhouse, the Winter Garden, who's vertical thrust follows the proportions of the lancet windows of the chapel. The roof structure is a quadripartite, pointed vault, built with tubular steel members that also reflects gothic style.

To bring the building down in scale and to let Frank Lloyd Wright's work breathe, Viñoly set back each floor, reducing the perceived mass of the building from street–level, and reflecting the residential building across the street.

More about Viñoly's building can be found here: www.rvapc.com/ht/HTProject.aspx?Base=Projects&projID=379

"Judith Carter Henry, 84 or 85 years old and bedridden, refused to leave her upstairs bedroom as the First Battle of Bull Run was fought on the hill surrounding her home. Snipers used the house; Judith Henry was killed by a bullet meant for the snipers. She was the first civilian killed at First Bull Run, July 21, 1861. The Second Battle of Bull Run was also fought on this hill. (Also called the First and Second Battles of Manassas.)"
